A random power is a fast way past a blank character sheet. Writers roll one to seed a superhero, villain, or side character before they have worked out a plot, then build the rest of the concept around what it forces them to solve. Tabletop groups use it for a one-shot session where everyone gets a random ability and has to improvise a hero around it. "What power would you pick?" is also a reliable icebreaker on its own — rolling one instead of choosing takes the pressure off and usually gets a more interesting answer.
